Closing a Business
The form used to close a previously registered business is known as a "Discontinuance of Trade Name." It can be obtained from the County Clerk’s office by clicking on the link above. You may file the Discontinuance in person at the County Clerk’s office or by mail. You will file four (4) copies of the Discontinuance. They must be notarized and bear the original signatures of all current owners or partners. The Discontinuance will bear the same Bergen County file number as the original Trade Name.
Whether filing by mail or in person, you will receive two (2) copies back, one stamped "filed" for your records and the other stamped "certified copy" which your bank will require in order to close your business account.
